Lousiana Politics

Filed under: World, Politics — Eric Huang @ 5:55 pm

After watching “All The King’s Men” yesterday at the movie theater, it got me thinking about how backwards and screwed up politics in especially in the South. And today, when I was watching 60 minutes I saw a part on how the Attorney General of the state of Lousiana is investigating 3 women doctors and nurses for their role in commiting “mercy” killings of several patients. (Original Link) After watching the segment I thought to myself, and why would the government attempt to put three women who had dedicated their whole lives to helping people in jail for life when the government wouldn’t even come and help the hospital evacuate?

Can anyone say what the fuck? I don’t understand it, to me it seems as if the state of Lousiana needs a CBS Newsscapegoat to take all the blame for the death of several patients. First, the situation was this, there was no electricity, no water, very little food, and then the government tells you that they aren’t coming to rescure you? What the hell would you do? Second, the doctor and nurses in question refuse to commit any mercy murders becuase they don’t believe in them.

So, your wondering how does this relate to the movie? Well, the movie according to Yahoo Movies, is summarized like this: “An idealistic southern politician, “Boss” Willie Stark, who appeals to the common man whilst effectively playing dirty politics, slowly becomes corrupted by the system.”

Well basically you have a good man who wants to challenge the system and get rid of the rampant corruption that exists in the senate and the local government. However, all the bad guys or the senators, oil companies, etc, want to impeach him. Eventually, becuase the whole political system is messed up, even the Stark, the good guy, ends up resorting to dirty measures to stay in power. In the end he is shot to death by a former associate who was convinced by his enemies that he was going to get prosecuted and take the blame for some of Stark’s actions. It’s ironic that someone who tried to change the system resorted to using the system and eventually was killed by the sytem. All The King's Men

And how is this related to the story featured on 60 minutes? Well, here is someone whose is trying to do everything in their power to help the sick in the hospital. And they are running out of supplies, and then they get the call that help isn’t coming. Maybe, they had to resort to mercy killings or maybe they did not. In my opinion, they probably did not, but it doesn’t matter becuase now they are being brought down by the same thing Stark in the movie was brought down. The doctor and the nurses are being investigated by the government for something they probably didn’t do, what does that mean? Obviously, they are being the scapegoats for the whole hospital incident during and after Hurrican Katrina. I just don’t understand why and how things like this can still occur when supposingly we have better measures to protect ourselves from these things.
