The Horrors of the Web Part 2

Filed under: Web, Rant — Eric Huang @ 8:00 pm

Remember part 1? Yeah, that was awhile back but I thought I’d go ahead and finish this 2 part series. Well, since I talked about MySpace last time, this time I’ll talk about spammers and scammers.

First thing I’ll talk about is ad-farms… You know those sites where it’s just a bunch of ads and they try to put cookies on your computer so they can send you spam. Yes, I bet you all have visited them by accident whether you’ve typed in a wrong URL or clicked on a google ad or something. There only purpose on the web is to get money to the owner by spaming the webpage with ads.

Here’s an example of a ad page. And on top of that, this guy was brave enough to register my domain I was intending to register, Thinkpoint.com, and then make it a ad-farm page! Then put a link in the top right corner of the page for me to email me to buy the domain! That’s crazy! Scammers like this really piss me off. Luckily for me, the TLD thinkpoint.org was still there and I decided to buy it right then and there in case the scammer got smart and bought that also.

I really often wonder how many people actually fall for those ads or links, I think most of the time they just lead to porn sites or something of the sort. And another thing is pop-ups. While I use Firefox all the time now, I never really have to deal with them, but somehow some of them still manage to get past the blocker through javascript I think. They’re extremly annoying. And what’s even more annoying is the new type of spam ads. Flash ads, oh, roll over this and bam you get hit with a full page ad with whiz-bang sounds and trailers… Highly annoying when the page automaticaly starts with the ads also.
