Repost: Movie Review of Little Miss Sunshine

Filed under: ThinkPoint Blog — Eric Huang @ 11:24 am

Yesterday I was going to try and organize a movie with some friends, but hey fate choose to disable all the phones in my house and my sister stole my cell phone. Heh, I was stuck in the house for like 5 hours. Anyhow after waiting and doing pretty much nothing, my mom and I decided to go watch a Comedy/Drama.

Little Miss Sunshine was given a B+ by Yahoo movies, and I have to say in overall terms it was a decent movie. However, I’m usually not the type of person who likes “cute” movies so I’ll give it a B. Let’s start with a short intro. It’s about a family with big troubles, a wild grandpa who likes reading porn, a “winner” dad, a tired mom, a “I-almost-tried-commited-suicide” brother (Frank), a “I-hate-the-world” son, and a innocent daughter. In short, the family is having troubles, and you get the feeling that everything isn’t alright. Soon, you hear about how the daughter (Olive) is being entered for a beauty pagent in California and everything goes to hell from there.

The “win it all or go home” dad pushes the broken family to drive to California, as they don’t have the money to fly, in a old yellow VW van. Along the way, the clutch breaks and they have to push the van to get it moving. Then, grandpa dies from his heiron and the son discovers that he is colorblind ruining his hopes of becoming a airplane pilot. They end up putting grandpa in the trunk as they discover the hospital won’t let them go without putting the corpse in a funeral home. After breaking several laws they end up in the parking lot of the Little Miss Sunshine pagent and the climax of the movie begins.

The son rediscovers his passion along with Frank, who also happens to be gay which let in part to why he tried to commit suicide, to become a airplane pilot no matter what. “Fuck everything else,” he says. The one quote I enjoyed the most was, “If you slept till you were 18, you would have missed all the suffering. That is what makes you who you are,” said by Frank. Meantime, in the pagent the dance routine of Olive turns out to be almost a “strip-tease” and horrifies the crowd and they eventually get thrown out but only after the whole family re-unites onstage and dances. This signifies that the old wounds had healed and everyone accomplished their goals and learned something. The movie ends with the yellow VW van driving down the highway back to Alburquerque.

Again, it was really quite funny at times and the whole movie theather was laughing, but to me it was just another funny drama. That was my two cents, feel free to add your thoughts by commenting on this review!

Is It The Right Decision?

Filed under: World, Politics — Eric Huang @ 8:56 pm

Remember when everyone was complaining about how “we” invaded Iraq for no reason? Well, guess what after several years were still there. I think the biggest thing military leaders forget when invading a foreign country is that often the people your invading don’t think your so great for “liberating” them. I mean well, let’s start with the basics, was there a good reason to invade Iraq? President Bush stated that Saddam Hussein had nuclear weapons. After we invaded US troops found no weapons of mass destruction, so either he never had them or Saddam hide them. In my opinion the “real” reasons were:

1) Create a American stronghold in the MiddleEast
2) Establish the first “Democracy” in the MiddleEast
3) Get easy access to OIl
4) Put pressure on the “terrorist” countries, Iran, Syria, etc

Why Is It So Damn Hard To Do This?

Filed under: Personal, Rant — Eric Huang @ 6:41 pm

Ever feel like your trying to do something and everyone else is trying to stop you? Well, I can safely tell you I’ve had this occur to me not just once, but at least 5 times this summer alone! For instance, I want to set up a get together with friends at the movie theater, I call them up and guess what, either nobodies home for the whole day, or they come up with some damn excuse. I’m going to say this loud and clear, if ya hate me, don’t be afraid to say it to my face. At least then I now who to put on FBI top 10 most wanted list when I become the director :P .

Note that sometimes people do have good reasons to say that they can’t go, but for some it just isn’t true! There home, not vacationing in Africa for goodness sake! I don’t know what to think honestly about this. It’s fustrating sometimes and it’s like why do I bother trying to do these things? Well, for one nobody else I know is going to do it! Is it becuase their damn lazy? How should I know?

The Horrors Of The Web Part 1

Filed under: Web — Eric Huang @ 10:12 am

Yes, did you know that there are many horrors on the web? Today I’ll be specifically talking about MySpace. Why do you say I think this sites are horrors? Well, tell me this, why do think a website that promotes the abuse of it’s features is a good thing? How many times do I have to see those damn pop-ups and google adsense ads? How many times do I have to listen to crap music blasted over a generic flash mp3 player? And for crying out loud, how many times do I have to see a horribly done page with no regards to standards or usability?

White Collar Working

Filed under: Personal — Eric Huang @ 3:34 pm

Summer is closing down and so must I. Some of you know I’m working at a technology company called ePlus. Working in an office enviroment has taught me a lot however it wasn’t all fun and joy. Often times I’d sit there looking bored as suprisingly I was the only person in the office who did anything related to my internship. But I’m not writing about my job in detail, this is just a introduction to what I’m going to really write about.

My topic for today is about working in a white collar enviroment. It’s different, I mean working in a cubicle 8-9 hours a day isn’t fun… There really is as much grey as they say they is! It’s totally unlike school and/or other experience I’ve had. I mean it’s not like working in a ice cream store is at all similar, however they probably do get paid better than I did! Minimum wage (BTW it’s at $5.15) is low for today’s standards, but I wasn’t actually expecting to get paid.
