News Stories That Aren’t News Stories

Filed under: World — Eric Huang @ 8:02 am

Well, great now we suppossingly have this half-insane person coming all the way from Thailand for some murder of a 6 year old girl. The first thing that bugs me, is that everyone refers to the girl as the “6-year-old beauty pageant contestant,” as CNN states. Just what the hell, who gives a crap about the girl being in a beauty pagent? I certaintly don’t care, why do they have to keep bringing that up?

And then, those beauty pagents are just sick also. Imagine dressing your child, I mean little child, in outlandish clothes two gerenations way ahead of her age and then showing her off you some retard judges. Meantime they get to jiggle their bodies and show off what? I mean, what do they have to show off? There freaking 6 years old! If it was a real model, well then that would be a different story wouldn’t it.

Now to the point of this post, why does the United States care so much about some random crazy guy who might of killed this girl back in 1996? Shouldn’t we be worrying about our marines dying in Iraq? Or those terrorists who are planning another 9/11 attack? Why worry about this?

This guy look much to you like a murderer? Then again, most guys who kill don’t look like serial killers. However, why is this one case getting so much publicity that it’s featured on every single major US news headlines? They can’t even figure out if he really did it, his family says he was at his house the whole night, but John Karr himself talks about some crazy things he did in the victim’s house. Then his attourny says he’s crazy and anything he says is invalid. Can you get your story straight or what?

Now can we stop worrying about this crazy guy and get back on the matters that are truely important to our country?

A History Lesson for the Modern Media

Boswell found out early on how seriously Dr. Johnson took the English language. Boswell casually “happened to say, it would be terrible if he (Dr. Johnson) should not find a speedy opportunity of returning to London.”

Johnson scolded him by saying, “Don’t, Sir, accustom yourself to use big words for little matters. It would not be terrible, though I were to be detained some time here. The practice of using words of disproportionate magnitude is, no doubt, too frequent every where…”

The quotation serves as a good lesson for our modern media whether in news, entertainment, or commercials. The culture is rife with the “greatest,” “most fabulous,” “never before seen” use of words that are disproportionate with the magnitude of the event.

What used to be the province of carnival barkers is now a daily insult to the intelligence of the TV audience. All in hopes of making a mediocre event much greater than it is.
